Introduction

I posted a new song. I recorded it a while ago, but I thought id be able to do more with it...and I was wrong. It seems that it is what it is. Danny told me if I tried to do anything else with it, I would just screw it up. He was right, so maybe ill just use it as an intro to the record. Its only about a minute long. It was never a hymn either. I was playing my banjo one night, hit record, and these lyrics just came out. It's called "Grave Of Many".

Down To The River To Pray

I posted a new hymn on the side.

I originally heard "Down To The River To Pray" on the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack, and I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that it's actually an old hymn that is in public domain. So I decided to write my own version. Check it out.

Re-writing Hymns

Just to clear things up a little, the hymns that I write are not exact recreations of the actual hymn itself.

Here is some background on how this all started.

The first hymn I wrote was "Where He Leads", which is not actually the name of the original song at all. I was in Kansas City working on a record and had some down time, so I picked up one of the guitars laying around and started to play what is now the guitar part for the song. I didn't have the lyrics at that time.

Laura Hackett (the girls record I was playing guitar on) had a hymnal with her one day so I started to flip through the pages and eventually came across the words from the original hymn. Luck have it, They fit perfectly with the guitar part I had just written, after a few minor adjustments. I have never actually heard the original song. I've only read the words.

Now you may be thinking, "Isn't that against copyright laws?". Well the answer is no. Many of these hymns were written before the music industry ever existed which means that a large majority of them do not have a copyright on them. This is called "public domain". These songs belong to the public. So I can recreate and record these songs however I please. They are then made my own.

I have never had so much fun writing songs. The words in these hymnals are beautiful and poetic, and I feel honored to be able to use them in my own works.

More to come

Hymns

House sitting for my parents has given me a surplus amount of time to do the things I've always thought about doing, but never actually did.

Number 24 on the "Things I sort of want to do, but I think Ill play PS3 instead" list, is constructing a blog to keep track of the progress I make re-writing Hymns. I plan to release an album of these hymns this April.

I would love to elaborate more on the process and importance of me working on this project, but honestly, I would rather just drive to the gas station right now and buy an energy drink. Plus, this way Ill actually have something to type about in my next post.
