Here is some background on how this all started.
The first hymn I wrote was "Where He Leads", which is not actually the name of the original song at all. I was in Kansas City working on a record and had some down time, so I picked up one of the guitars laying around and started to play what is now the guitar part for the song. I didn't have the lyrics at that time.
Laura Hackett (the girls record I was playing guitar on) had a hymnal with her one day so I started to flip through the pages and eventually came across the words from the original hymn. Luck have it, They fit perfectly with the guitar part I had just written, after a few minor adjustments. I have never actually heard the original song. I've only read the words.
Now you may be thinking, "Isn't that against copyright laws?". Well the answer is no. Many of these hymns were written before the music industry ever existed which means that a large majority of them do not have a copyright on them. This is called "public domain". These songs belong to the public. So I can recreate and record these songs however I please. They are then made my own.
I have never had so much fun writing songs. The words in these hymnals are beautiful and poetic, and I feel honored to be able to use them in my own works.
More to come
